Cars are a big part of our lives. Some people treat them like family, some just see them as a way to go from point A to B. But now with electric cars coming everywhere, the old question of buying a petrol car has turned into a debate – should you buy an EV or just stick with petrol? Honestly, it’s not a simple yes or no. Both have good sides and bad sides, and it really depends on how you use your car. Let me try to break it down, maybe in a bit messy way, but real.

Price – The First Thing Everyone Looks At

Petrol cars are usually cheaper to buy. If you just want a small hatchback, you can get one at a very affordable price. Electric cars cost more right now, because batteries are expensive. Sometimes double the price for same size of car, and that makes people hesitate.

But then, when you run it, EVs are cheaper. Charging is way less than filling petrol tank. Like, if petrol is ₹100 per litre, driving same distance in EV can cost you maybe 1/4 or less. That means over 3–5 years, you save a lot of money. Also goverments give subsidies, like in India you get road tax cut, and discounts under FAME scheme. So, upfront petrol wins, but long run EV is cheaper.

Maintanance (and the Headache Factor)

Petrol cars have been there forever, so we know they need oil change, filter change, clutch work, spark plugs, bla bla. Every service you spend a few thousand at least.

Electric cars are much simpler. No oil, no clutch, no exhaust. Less moving parts means less things to break. So maintanance cost is low. But ya, the battery is scary. If it fails after warranty, it can cost lakhs. Petrol car doesn’t have that big risk.

Driving Feel – Which is More Fun?

Refueling vs Charging

This is a big difference. With petrol, you just go to any fuel station, 5 minutes, done. With EV, charging takes time. Home charging takes 6–8 hours. Fast charging takes 45 minutes or more. That’s still not same as petrol.

The Enviroment Question

Petrol cars give you 500–700 km in full tank easily. EVs also say 300–500 km range, but in real life with AC, traffic, driving style, it goes down. And unlike petrol, you can’t just refill fast. That makes people nervous.

So again, daily city users won’t care much, but highway drivers will.

Resale Value

This is tricky. Petrol cars have a strong resale market. You sell after 5 years, you get some good value. EVs are new, so resale is unpredictable. Buyers are worried about battery life. Maybe after 2–3 years this will improve, but for now petrol is safer for resale.

Which One Fits You?

If you live in city, have parking space with charger, and don’t travel long distances daily, EV makes sense.
If you do highway trips, want zero worry about charging, petrol still better.
